OverviewCities8Attractions8ToursArticles

Europe's EuroVelo network is the world's most developed long-distance cycling infrastructure—8,000+ km of routes connecting the Arctic to the Mediterranean, the Atlantic to the Black Sea. Whether you're riding coastal cliffs, river valleys, or former Cold War borders, the routes are well-signposted, mostly traffic-free, and link small towns where you'll actually meet locals.

Most routes take 2–4 weeks to complete, though you can tackle sections. Accommodation ranges from wild camping to family-run guesthouses. Ferries connect some routes; trains carry your bike if legs give out. Spring and autumn are shoulder seasons—fewer tourists, cooler riding, cheaper beds.

This is not a velodrome or racing circuit. It's slow travel through farmland, forests, and cities that haven't been bulldozed for motorways. Expect punctures, gravel sections, and the occasional bewildered tourist asking for directions.

Highlights

  1. Atlantic Coast Route (EuroVelo 1)Ride Norwegian fjords to Portuguese fishing villages. Coastal switchbacks, ferry hops, wild Atlantic swells.
  2. Rhine Cycle Route (EuroVelo 15)Swiss Alps to Dutch deltas. 1,300 km of vineyard climbs, castle ruins, and North Sea headwinds.
  3. Pilgrims Route (EuroVelo 3)Medieval paths from Scandinavia to Santiago de Compostela. Quiet roads, cathedrals, dormitory hostels.
  4. Mediterranean Route (EuroVelo 8)Cádiz to Athens via Southern France, Italy, Croatia. Limestone cliffs, sea swims, expensive espressos.
  5. Iron Curtain TrailFollow the Cold War border from Barents Sea to Black Sea. Post-Soviet villages, Soviet monuments, cheap beer.
  6. Baltic to Adriatic (EuroVelo 9)Gdańsk to Pula across Eastern Europe. Flat plains, medieval old towns, minimal tourist infrastructure.

Everything you need to know

When's best to ride?+
May–June and September–October. July–August brings heat, crowds, and booked-out accommodation. Winter is impassable in Scandinavia and Alps; Eastern European routes stay rideable until November.
Do I need a visa?+
EU/EEA/Swiss citizens don't need one. Most others get 90 days visa-free in the Schengen area; check your passport country. UK citizens may need additional documentation.
How much does a section cost?+
€30–50/day covers camping/budget hostel, pasta dinners, and local transport. €70–120/day gets you mid-range hotels and restaurant meals. Bikes, ferries, and train reservations are extra.
What's the safety situation?+
Routes are generally safe for solo riders, though petty theft happens in major cities. Eastern European sections have fewer tourists but solid cycling culture. Wild camping is tolerated; ask locals first.
What bike should I bring or buy?+
A hybrid or gravel bike handles gravel EuroVelo sections better than road bikes. Second-hand bikes cost €80–200 in most cities. Bring spares: inner tubes, chain oil, and brake pads aren't always stocked in small villages.
