Norway rewards slow travel. The fjords are genuine—steep granite walls, waterfalls, silence. You'll pay for it, but the landscape justifies the spend. Come for the scenery; stay because the light does strange things to your sense of time.

Winter means darkness and northern lights. Summer means the opposite: the midnight sun turns night into a soft perpetual dusk. Spring and autumn are quieter, cheaper, and often clearer. The hiking is serious; the salmon is excellent; the coffee culture is real.

Navigating here means accepting that things close early, distances are vast, and a sandwich costs £8. But the pay-off is straightforward: you're alone with mountains, water, and weather. No marketing required.

Highlights

  1. Norwegian Fjords (Western Norway)Geiranger, Nærøy, Sognefjord—sheer cliffs, cascading waterfalls, accessible by train and boat.

  3. Flåmsbana RailwaySteep mountain rail line through valleys and tunnels. One hour, twenty hairpins, genuine views.

Everything you need to know

When's best to go?+
Sep–Nov and Mar–May for aurora and fewer crowds. Jun–Aug for midnight sun and hiking (expensive, busy). Dec–Feb coldest but darkest for lights. Avoid shoulder seasons for discounts; they're actually pleasant.
Do I need a visa?+
EU/EEA/UK citizens: no visa. Most others: 90 days visa-free, or apply for a Schengen. Check current rules; Norway sits outside the EU.
How much does it cost daily?+
£25–35 hostel dorm bed. Meals: £8–15 casual, £20–40 sit-down. Budget £50–70/day for basics; expect £100–150+ if eating and staying comfortably.
Is it safe?+
Very safe. Petty theft rare. Polar bears exist in Svalbard (guides required). Weather and remote terrain are the real risks; respect them.
What should I pack?+
Waterproof jacket (essential). Insulating layers, thermal base. Good boots. Headtorch for winter. Midges in summer (repellent). Accommodation is warm; you're warm outside or not going out.
