OverviewCities1Attractions1ToursArticles

Sint Eustatius is a small Dutch Caribbean island that feels genuinely off the beaten path. Most visitors are divers drawn to the reefs and shipwrecks; everyone else seems to have forgotten it exists. The capital, Oranjestad, is a working port town, not a resort strip.

The island's real draw is underwater. The reefs start near shore and drop fast; wrecks from centuries of shipping lean on the seabed. On land, hiking the dormant volcano and wandering the historical sites—warehouses, fortifications, slave quarters—gives you the other half of the story.

It's small enough to see in 4–5 days, cheap enough to stay longer, and quiet enough that you'll hear yourself think. Expect basic guesthouses, simple food, and no nightlife to speak of. That's the point.

Highlights

Everything you need to know

When's best to visit?+
Apr–Jun and Sep–Nov avoid hurricane season and peak crowds. Oct–Nov is quietest but rainier. Dec–Mar is dry and calm but pricier and busier. Jul–Sep is cheap and warm but wet.
Do I need a visa?+
EU and US citizens get 90 days visa-free. Most other nationalities get 14–30 days on arrival. Check with your embassy; rules vary. Passport must be valid 6 months beyond departure.
How much does it cost per day?+
Budget $40–60 (guesthouses, street food, beach time). Mid-range $100–150 (decent hotel, restaurants, one dive or tour). Diving and watersports add $60–150 per activity.
Is it safe?+
Yes. Oranjestad is sleepy and welcoming. Petty theft is rare. Violent crime is virtually non-existent. Standard precautions apply; avoid displaying valuables at night.
What should I pack for diving?+
Reef shoes (sharp rocks), sun protection, and log book if certified. Water temp is 26–28°C (77–82°F) year-round; a thin 3mm rashguard is enough. Dive shops rent gear but bring your own if picky.
