Quiet Caribbean island where diving and history outlast the crowds

Sint Eustatius is a small Dutch Caribbean island that feels genuinely off the beaten path. Most visitors are divers drawn to the reefs and shipwrecks; everyone else seems to have forgotten it exists. The capital, Oranjestad, is a working port town, not a resort strip.
The island's real draw is underwater. The reefs start near shore and drop fast; wrecks from centuries of shipping lean on the seabed. On land, hiking the dormant volcano and wandering the historical sites—warehouses, fortifications, slave quarters—gives you the other half of the story.
It's small enough to see in 4–5 days, cheap enough to stay longer, and quiet enough that you'll hear yourself think. Expect basic guesthouses, simple food, and no nightlife to speak of. That's the point.
