Tanzania punches well above its weight. You've got Kilimanjaro looming over coffee plantations, the Serengeti's annual migration, and coral reefs off Zanzibar—all within a country the size of Nigeria. It's not cheap to visit, but the wildlife density and landscape variety are genuinely world-class.

The north is the traditional safari corridor: Arusha as the hub, then Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Kilimanjaro. The west—Gombe and Mahale—offers chimp trekking and fewer tourists. Zanzibar is the off-switch: spice plantations, Stone Town architecture, and Indian Ocean snorkelling.

Tanzania requires patience with logistics. Roads are rough outside main routes, fuel can be patchy, and park fees are steep. But if you're after authentic East African wildlife and culture without the infrastructure cosiness of Kenya, this is it.

Highlights

  1. Serengeti National ParkTwo million wildebeest and zebras on open grassland; gut-punch landscape, serious wildlife density.
  2. Mount KilimanjaroAfrica's highest peak. Six trekking routes ranging from five to nine days; altitude management is real.
  3. Ngorongoro Conservation AreaGiant volcanic crater holding zebras, lions, and buffalo; drive-in game viewing from the rim.
  4. Zanzibar's Stone TownSwahili architecture, narrow lanes, spice markets. Balancing tourism hype with genuine 18th-century character.
  5. Gombe and Mahale chimpanzee trekkingWestern parks for habitat-immersive chimp encounters; fewer crowds, wilder feel than northern circuit.
  6. Indian Ocean reefs and islandsCoral snorkelling, dhow sailing, and quiet beach stops; Pemba offers better dive conditions than Zanzibar.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to visit?+
Jun–Oct (dry season) for wildlife; Jan–Feb also dry. Nov–May is green season: fewer tourists, lower prices, lush landscapes. Kilimanjaro is climbable year-round but clearer views Jun–Oct.
Do I need a visa?+
Most nationalities need a visa on arrival or pre-arranged; check your embassy. Cost ~$50 USD. Ensure your passport has 6+ months validity.
What's the realistic daily budget?+
$25–40 backpacker (hostels, street food, local transport); $60–120 mid-range (decent guesthouses, restaurant meals); $200+ comfortable (safari lodges, flights, guides).
Is it safe?+
Largely safe for tourists in main areas. Petty theft in cities is common; avoid walking alone at night. Banditry is rare but exists in remote north. Use registered guides for wildlife.
What should I pack?+
Malaria prophylaxis (consult a doctor), high-SPF sunscreen, neutral clothing for safari, sturdy hiking boots for Kilimanjaro, and cash—ATMs are sparse outside Dar es Salaam and Arusha.
