The USA is too big to see as one thing. You've got deserts that feel alien, forests that go on for days, coastlines that shift personality every few hundred kilometres. Cities run from brutally efficient to delightfully chaotic. Most travellers pick a region or two and go deep rather than trying to grid the whole thing.

The infrastructure is solid—roads are good, buses and trains exist (though cars dominate), and you can eat well for cheap or spend wildly. English is everywhere, but the cultural shifts between regions are genuine enough that what works in New York feels wrong in rural Montana.

Planning matters here because distances are deceptive. A drive that looks short on the map can eat half your day. But that's partly the point—the journey itself is often the attraction.

Highlights

  1. Southwest deserts and canyonsUtah, Arizona, New Mexico. Red rock formations, slot canyons, and landscapes that feel extraterrestrial. Hiking varies from casual to technical.
  2. California coast and rangesPacific Highway drives, redwood forests, Sierra mountains, and cities from San Francisco to San Diego. Wildly diverse in a few hundred kilometres.
  3. Pacific NorthwestOregon and Washington deliver temperate rainforests, volcanic peaks, and coastal charm. Seattle and Portland are walkable, quirky cities with strong food scenes.
  4. Florida beaches and wetlandsAtlantic and Gulf coasts, the Everglades, and keys. Warm year-round, but hurricanes are a real concern in summer and autumn.
  5. Appalachian regionBlue Ridge Mountains, folk music heritage, and rambling scenic drives through small towns. Budget-friendly and less crowded than the coasts.
  6. Great Plains and MidwestWide open spaces, historic trails, and cities like Chicago. Often overlooked but cheaper and less touristy than coastal regions.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to visit?+
Spring (Apr–May) and autumn (Sep–Oct) are ideal almost everywhere—mild weather, fewer crowds. Summer is hot and busy; winter is cold in the north, mild in the south. Avoid hurricane season (Jun–Nov) in Florida.
Do I need a visa?+
British and Australian citizens get 90 days visa-free under the Visa Waiver Program, but you must apply for ESTA online beforehand. Canadians don't need a visa at all.
How much does a day cost?+
$40–60 backpacking (hostels, street food, free attractions) · $100–150 mid-range (budget hotels, casual dining) · $250+ comfortable (decent hotels, good restaurants).
Is it safe?+
Generally yes, especially in tourist areas and smaller towns. Avoid isolated urban neighbourhoods at night; petty theft and car break-ins happen in cities. Violent crime is low for tourists.
What should I know about driving?+
Roads are excellent and well-signposted, but distances are massive—checking fuel and water before remote stretches isn't optional. Speed limits are enforced. An International Driving Permit works alongside your home licence.
