The USA is too big to see as one thing. You've got deserts that feel alien, forests that go on for days, coastlines that shift personality every few hundred kilometres. Cities run from brutally efficient to delightfully chaotic. Most travellers pick a region or two and go deep rather than trying to grid the whole thing.

The infrastructure is solid—roads are good, buses and trains exist (though cars dominate), and you can eat well for cheap or spend wildly. English is everywhere, but the cultural shifts between regions are genuine enough that what works in New York feels wrong in rural Montana.

Planning matters here because distances are deceptive. A drive that looks short on the map can eat half your day. But that's partly the point—the journey itself is often the attraction.

1. Southwest deserts and canyons — Utah, Arizona, New Mexico. Red rock formations, slot canyons, and landscapes that feel extraterrestrial. Hiking varies from casual to technical.
2. California coast and ranges — Pacific Highway drives, redwood forests, Sierra mountains, and cities from San Francisco to San Diego. Wildly diverse in a few hundred kilometres.
3. Pacific Northwest — Oregon and Washington deliver temperate rainforests, volcanic peaks, and coastal charm. Seattle and Portland are walkable, quirky cities with strong food scenes.
4. Florida beaches and wetlands — Atlantic and Gulf coasts, the Everglades, and keys. Warm year-round, but hurricanes are a real concern in summer and autumn.
5. Appalachian region — Blue Ridge Mountains, folk music heritage, and rambling scenic drives through small towns. Budget-friendly and less crowded than the coasts.
6. Great Plains and Midwest — Wide open spaces, historic trails, and cities like Chicago. Often overlooked but cheaper and less touristy than coastal regions.
