Vatican City is 0.44 square kilometres of sovereign territory enclosed within Rome. You'll spend a few hours here, maximum. Most visitors come for the Sistine Chapel ceiling and the Vatican Museums—genuinely world-class art, though often shoulder-to-shoulder with crowds.

It's not a holiday destination; it's a tick-box pilgrimage or art marathon. Entry requires a ticket, queues are long, and photography is forbidden in the chapels. Plan early morning or book skip-the-line access if you're serious about it.

There's no lodging here, no casual wandering, no restaurants worth your time. You come, you see, you leave. Most travellers base themselves in central Rome and visit as a day trip or half-day excursion.

Highlights

1. Sistine Chapel — Michelangelo's ceiling and Last Judgment fresco. Crowds are relentless; arrive early or book ahead.
2. Vatican Museums — One of the world's greatest art collections. Plan 3–4 hours minimum; most people rush and regret it.
