Few places in the world carry the emotional weight of the Anne Frank House on Prinsengracht in the Jordaan district. The building itself is a narrow, centuries-old canal house, and walking through its rooms — including the concealed annex where Anne Frank and her family hid for over two years during the Nazi occupation — is a quietly devastating experience. The original diary pages are on display, along with photographs, personal belongings, and Otto Frank's account of returning alone after the war. It is understated and deeply human, and it stays with you long after you leave. Expect the visit to take around 60 to 90 minutes. The space is intimate and intentionally preserved rather than heavily curated, which means some doorways are low, staircases are steep, and accessibility is limited for wheelchair users. The famous hinged bookcase that concealed the annex entrance is still there, and standing in front of it produces a strange stillness that no amount of reading beforehand quite prepares you for. Advance booking is absolutely essential. Timed entry tickets sell out weeks ahead, particularly between April and October, and walk-up entry is rarely available. Book directly through the Anne Frank House website at annefrank.org to avoid inflated third-party prices. The museum is a short walk from the Westermarkt tram stop (lines 13 and 17), or an easy cycle from almost anywhere in central Amsterdam. There is no cloakroom, so travel light — large bags are not permitted inside. If you are visiting in summer, book at least three to four weeks in advance and choose a morning slot to avoid the heaviest afternoon crowds.
