Batangas Bay sits about two to three hours south of Manila by road, which makes it the go-to weekend escape for capital-based divers and the proving ground for more new Open Water cards than anywhere else in the Philippines. That accessibility cuts both ways — the reefs closest to Anilao and Mabini see heavy traffic, and you'll notice anchor scarring and silt disturbance on some shallower bommies. Dig a little deeper, though, and the underwater world more than justifies the journey. Depths across the bay typically run from 5 metres on the sandy shelves to 30–35 metres along the steeper walls at sites like Sombrero Island and Beatrice Rock. Visibility averages 10–20 metres, occasionally pushing past that after calm settled weather. Currents are mild to moderate at most sites, making them genuinely manageable for newer divers, though Sombrero can push hard on incoming tides. This is macro country first and foremost — nudibranchs, frogfish, rhinopias, ghost pipefish, and hairy squat lobsters reward patient, slow divers who take their time over rubble patches. Larger pelagics do pass through, but don't plan your trip around them. Day boats are the standard arrangement here. Dozens of small operators run out of Anilao proper and the surrounding barangays, ranging from basic bangka outfits charging very reasonable rates to well-equipped resorts with nitrox, decent rental gear, and in-house instructors. Liveaboards do operate in the Verde Island Passage nearby and are worth considering if you want to cover more ground without burning hours in traffic. There are no meaningful snorkelling platforms outside the shallows at a handful of resort house reefs. Best time to visit is November through May; avoid the July–September typhoon window entirely.
