Beijing
Beijing, Chinacities
Beijing hits differently to any other city in China. Where Shanghai pulses with commercial energy and Shenzhen feels relentlessly forward-looking, Beijing carries the full weight of Chinese history on its shoulders — and wears it without apology. The scale alone is disorienting at first. Boulevards are vast, blocks are enormous, and the sheer density of significant sites crammed into this sprawling capital can leave you genuinely overwhelmed by day two.
The obvious anchors are worth every bit of the hype. Tiananmen Square at dawn, before the tour groups arrive, has an eerie stillness that stays with you. The Forbidden City requires most of a day to do justice, and the view from Jingshan Park directly to its north gives you one of the finest rooftop panoramas in Asia. Further out, the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall offers a less-crowded alternative to the heavily restored Badaling stretch, with a cable car and a toboggan run that makes it genuinely fun for all ages.
Between the grand monuments, Beijing reveals itself in its hutong lanes — the narrow alleyways threading through Dongcheng and Xicheng districts. Wander through Nanluoguxiang or the quieter streets around Shichahai Lake and you find courtyard houses, local breakfast spots serving jianbing (savoury crepes cooked fresh on a griddle), and a neighbourhood rhythm that high-rise China rarely allows. Peking duck is the centrepiece dish, and places like the Da Dong chain serve it with genuine finesse, though your hotel concierge can usually point you toward something more local and cheaper.
Getting around is straightforward on the extensive metro system, though taxis and ride-hailing apps require a Chinese payment method — sort that before you arrive. Air quality fluctuates, so pack a small mask for high-pollution days. Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) offer the most comfortable temperatures and the clearest skies.
