Buxa Tiger Reserve sits in the far north of West Bengal, tucked against the Bhutan border in a way that gives the forest a distinctly different character from the better-known parks further west. The landscape here shifts constantly — from dense sal and mixed deciduous forest on the lower foothills to riverine grasslands, wetland pockets, and rocky ridgelines as you climb.

It feels wilder and less curated than Kaziranga or Corbett, which is precisely the appeal.

The reserve is one of India's designated elephant corridors, and herds move through with remarkable regularity, particularly around the Buxa Fort trail and along the Jayanti River valley. The wetlands near Jayanti support an impressive range of birdlife, and if you're lucky — and patient — you may spot white-rumped or slender-billed vultures, both critically endangered species that still find refuge here.

Gaur, leopard, and the occasional clouded leopard round out the wildlife list, though sightings require real time in the field.

The gateway town of Alipurduar is around 30 kilometres away and well-connected by rail from Kolkata, making access relatively straightforward. From Alipurduar, shared jeeps or hired cars reach Rajabhatkhawa — the main entry point — in under an hour. Permits are required and can be arranged through the forest department office at Rajabhatkhawa; fees are modest but the process takes time, so arrive early.

Accommodation ranges from the basic forest rest houses to small lodges in Jayanti village.

The October to March window offers the best wildlife visibility and manageable temperatures; the monsoon months bring leeches, flooded tracks, and limited access, so plan accordingly.
