Gustavia's harbour might be the most theatrical anchorage in the Caribbean — a tight, well-organised bowl of superyachts, glossy charter cats and the occasional battered cruising ketch, all squeezed beneath red-roofed colonial buildings. St Barts runs on French efficiency and serious money, and the place wears both without apology. You come here knowing it will cost you, and somehow it still surprises you at the till. The sailing to and from is genuinely exhilarating. The Atlantic tradewinds clock between east-northeast and east-southeast from December through April, delivering steady 15–25 knot conditions across the channel passages from St Martin's Marigot Bay or Simpson Bay, roughly 25 nautical miles northwest. That crossing can be lively — short, steep swells build quickly across the open fetch — so time your departure for a morning slot when the trades are settled and you're not punching leftover chop in the dark. Day sailing is the right call here. The island itself offers limited anchoring options beyond Gustavia and the calmer lee of Anse de Grand Cul de Sac on the northeastern shore, where the reef provides reasonable protection for a lunch stop. Ashore, St Barts is effectively a slice of the French Riviera transplanted to the tropics. Shellona Beach at St Jean ticks both boxes — good snorkelling and a bar tab that will remind you where you are. Provisioning is excellent by Caribbean standards: a proper supermarché in Gustavia stocks charcuterie, decent wine and fresh baguettes daily. Charter bases operate primarily out of Sint Maarten rather than St Barts itself, so most visitors arrive by sea. As a French collectivity, EU passport holders have no paperwork friction; others clear customs at the Port de Gustavia. Bareboat charterers comfortable with channel crossings will enjoy this; nervous first-timers should book a skipper for at least the passages.
