The Sambódromo Marquês de Sapucaí is one of those places that hits you differently depending on when you visit. During Carnival — typically held in February or early March — this 700-metre-long purpose-built parade avenue in the Santo Cristo neighbourhood transforms into something almost otherworldly. Tens of thousands of people pack the tiered grandstands and private camarotes as samba schools of up to 4,000 performers surge through, dressed in towering costumes and moving with a precision that seems impossible given the scale. The drumming alone is physical — you feel it in your chest long before the procession reaches you. Outside of Carnival, the Sambódromo is quieter but still worth a look. The concrete stands designed by Oscar Niemeyer have a certain brutalist poetry to them, and a handful of museums and exhibits operate along the strip. Some samba school rehearsals open to the public in the months leading up to Carnival, which is genuinely a wonderful way to experience the energy without the prices or the crowds. For Carnival itself, book tickets months in advance — sectors closest to the judging tower (around Sector 9 and 11) offer some of the best views, and prices vary significantly by sector and night. Champions' Night, held the weekend after the main parades, tends to be cheaper and less hectic. Wear light clothing, expect heat and humidity, and keep your valuables minimal. The nearest Metro station is Central, about a 10-minute walk away, and taxis or ride-shares drop you close to the entrances on Avenida Presidente Vargas. If you're visiting outside Carnival season, come on a weekday morning when the neighbourhood is calm and you can actually appreciate the architecture.
