Chobe National Park sits in northern Botswana and delivers one of Africa's most genuinely overwhelming wildlife experiences. The park is best known for harbouring the highest concentration of elephants on Earth — during the dry season, herds of several hundred animals converge on the Chobe River in scenes that feel almost prehistoric.
Watching a thousand elephants move through golden light towards the water is the kind of thing that stays with you long after you've left.
The landscape shifts considerably as you move through the park. The Chobe Riverfront, the most visited section, offers dense riparian woodland and open floodplains teeming with buffalo, hippo, crocodile, and abundant birdlife including carmine bee-eaters in season. Further south, the Savuti Channel and Linyanti Wetlands offer a wilder, more remote atmosphere with strong lion and leopard sightings.
What sets Chobe apart from Kruger or the Serengeti is the river safari — drifting by flat-bottomed boat at eye level with drinking elephants and bathing hippos is genuinely unlike anything else on the continent.
The gateway town is Kasane, a small, functional town right on the park's northern boundary where you'll find lodges, fuel, and park entry permits. Entry fees are paid in US dollars or pula and vary for self-drive versus guided access. Most visitors hire a local guide or join a camp-organised game drive, which is strongly recommended given how deeply some tracks flood in the wet season.
A 4WD is essential for self-driving, and permits must be arranged through Botswana's Department of Wildlife and National Parks.
The dry season, May to October, is the best time to visit — wildlife concentrations peak around August and September, so aim for those months if elephant herds are your priority.
