Corbett sits in a satisfying overlap between the Himalayan foothills and the Terai, which means the habitat shifts on you constantly — dry deciduous sal forest, riparian scrub, elephant grass, and the broad stony shallows of the Ramganga River all within a morning's circuit. That variety is precisely what makes it compelling rather than straightforward.

The Ramganga is where most serious birders focus first. Ibisbill work the boulder-strewn shallows with a quiet persistence that makes them surprisingly hard to spot despite their size, and patience near the water at dawn pays off reliably between November and March. Crested Kingfisher haunt the same stretches, perching on midstream rocks and giving themselves away with that rattling call before you've located them by eye.

Red Junglefowl are almost routine along forest edges, though watching a full male step into morning light still earns attention. Great Slaty Woodpecker requires more effort — listen for the loud, deliberate tapping deep in the taller sal stands and follow it on foot rather than from a vehicle.

Access runs through the Dhikala and Bijrani zones, both requiring advance permits that fill quickly in peak season. Jeep safaris are the standard format; private vehicles without approved guides are not permitted inside the park. Qualified naturalist guides vary considerably in birding knowledge, so it is worth asking specifically about bird experience when booking.

Accommodation ranges from the atmospheric old Forest Rest House at Dhikala to mid-range lodges around Ramnagar town on the buffer boundary.

Winter raptors including Osprey and various eagles are a genuine bonus from November through February, when the river levels drop and visibility along the Ramganga improves significantly.

Visit November to February; bring a spotting scope for river species, rubber boots for wet-season trails, and DEET — the forest holds mosquitoes year-round.
