Dampier Strait sits at the heart of Raja Ampat's famous current highways, and diving here feels less like visiting a reef and more like being absorbed into something genuinely alive. The strait funnels nutrient-rich water between Waigeo and Batanta islands, and that constant feeding frenzy of plankton is exactly why everything from pygmy seahorses to whale sharks shows up in the same stretch of water. Visibility swings between 10 and 25 metres depending on the tide and season — you learn to time your dives around current tables rather than fight them. Depths here suit most experience levels, with productive reef walls starting at 5 metres and dropping past 30. Sites like Arborek Jetty and Manta Sandy are accessible to confident Open Water divers, though several channel dives — particularly around Cape Kri and Sardine Reef — demand solid buoyancy and experience reading moving water. Drift dives past schooling fusiliers, batfish and bumphead parrotfish in the hundreds are standard; manta rays cruise the cleaning stations year-round, and patient divers willing to wait in the blue are occasionally rewarded with whale sharks. The coral coverage here is among the best I've seen globally. There are signs of historical bleaching in shallower sections, but the deeper structures remain dense and diverse, and local conservation partnerships — including reef-check programmes and mooring buoy installations — have made a visible difference. Most divers reach Dampier Strait via liveaboard from Sorong, which gives you the flexibility to follow the current and the animals. Day-trip operators out of Waisai offer a cheaper alternative, though range and timing are more limited. A handful of small dive resorts on Kri and Arborek also offer guided house-reef access. Dive here between October and April for calmer seas; Advanced Open Water certification is strongly recommended for anything beyond the jetty sites.
