The Danube Delta is genuinely unlike anywhere else in Europe for sheer, overwhelming abundance of birds. You arrive by boat from Tulcea and almost immediately the scale of the place recalibrates your expectations — channels cutting through dense reed beds, willows trailing in brown water, and herons standing in improbable numbers on every exposed branch.

The delta covers roughly 5,800 square kilometres of wetland, open lake, and floating reed island, and navigating it properly requires time and a reliable local boatman-guide. Without one, you'll miss the tucked-away colonies entirely.

Dawn on the water is the thing to plan your whole trip around. By first light, Dalmatian Pelicans drift low over the channels in loose, prehistoric-looking formations, and Pygmy Cormorants cluster in the willows in numbers that genuinely surprise you even after seeing photographs.

The mixed heron colonies — Grey, Purple, Night, Squacco, and Little Egret all nesting within metres of each other — are among the most spectacular in Europe. Ferruginous Duck is reliably present on the quieter lakes, and Whiskered Terns work low over open water through spring and summer, with White-winged Black Tern mixing in during migration.

Most visitors base themselves in Tulcea or in one of the delta villages, reached only by boat. Accommodation runs from guesthouses in Crişan or Mila 23 to more comfortable hotels back in Tulcea. The guest houses are basic but perfectly functional, and staying inside the delta puts you on the water at the right hours.

Go between late April and early June for breeding colonies at their most active; bring a good scope, long rubber boots for any channel-side walking, and serious mosquito repellent — the delta earns its reputation on that front.
