Drau Cycle Path (Drauradweg)
Toblach to Maribor, Italy/Austria/Sloveniaactivities
There are few long-distance routes in Europe where you can start in the shadow of the Dolomites and roll, mostly downhill, all the way to Slovenia without once feeling punished by the road. That is the quiet pleasure of the Drauradweg. You begin in Toblach at around 1,200 metres and the river does most of the thinking from there, pulling you northeast through a narrowing valley before widening into the broad Austrian heartland. Most riders comfortably cover the 370 kilometres in six to eight days, averaging fifty to sixty kilometres daily without any real suffering.
The surface is the route's strongest selling point. From Toblach through to Villach and Klagenfurt, you are largely on dedicated riverside cycle paths, smooth tarmac or well-compacted gravel, almost entirely separated from traffic. East of Klagenfurt into Slovenia the path becomes patchier — expect some rougher gravel sections and brief stretches sharing quiet rural roads — so a hybrid or touring tyre handles it more comfortably than a slick road tyre. The elevation gain is modest once you leave the initial descent from Toblach; the Drau valley keeps things genuinely flat through Austria.
Lienz is a natural first-night stop and a lovely one, with the Lienz Dolomites framing the town. Klagenfurt at roughly the halfway point earns a rest day if you have time. Accommodation is plentiful throughout — guesthouses, farmstays, and simple hotels cluster near the path, so you rarely need to book far ahead outside August. Bike hire is available in Toblach and Lienz, and the route is well served by trains if you need to bail out or reposition.
May through September suits this route well; pack a waterproof layer and a spare tube because afternoon storms roll through the valleys without much warning.
