Dubrovnik's Old Town is one of those places that genuinely earns its reputation. Enclosed within remarkably intact medieval walls that stretch nearly two kilometres around the city's edge, the limestone streets, baroque churches, and terracotta rooftops create a skyline that feels almost theatrical. Walking the main thoroughfare, the Stradun, for the first time is a proper arrival moment — the pale stone polished smooth by centuries of footfall, glowing amber in the late afternoon light. That said, honesty demands a mention of the crowds. During summer, particularly July and August, the Old Town is genuinely overwhelming — cruise ship passengers pour through the Pile Gate in the morning and the narrow lanes become uncomfortably packed. If you can, visit in May, early June, or September, when the light is still warm but the streets are manageable. Mornings before nine o'clock or evenings after six are your best windows even in peak season. The city walls themselves are worth every kuna of the entry fee — currently around 35 euros for adults — and the circuit takes roughly ninety minutes at a relaxed pace. The views down into the Adriatic and back over the terracotta rooftops are extraordinary, particularly from the southern stretch. Wear proper shoes with grip, as the stone becomes slippery, and bring water because there is no shade along the top. Getting here is straightforward: buses 1A and 1B connect the Old Town's Pile Gate to Dubrovnik's main bus station and the Lapad area frequently. Taxis and rideshares are readily available, though traffic into the city centre slows considerably in summer. Avoid visiting mid-morning in July or August unless you genuinely enjoy being shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers.
