Epping Forest District

Epping Forest carries a quiet, otherworldly atmosphere that few green spaces in southeast England can match. Stretching roughly 19 kilometres from Manor Park in east London to just north of Epping town, this ancient woodland feels genuinely old — and it is.

The gnarled, wide-trunked pollard beeches that line tracks like High Beech and Fairmead Road are living relics, shaped by centuries of lopping and left to grow wild since the Epping Forest Act of 1878 handed stewardship to the City of London Corporation. Walking among them on an overcast autumn morning, with mist softening the canopy and leaf litter muffling your footsteps, is a genuinely atmospheric experience.

Unlike the manicured feel of nearby Hainault or Thorndon Country Parks, Epping has a rawness to it. The terrain shifts between open grassland plains, boggy valley bottoms, and dense hornbeam and oak woodland.

You might spot fallow deer moving between the trees — they are common enough that patience and quiet walking usually reward you — along with treecreepers, nuthatches, and in summer, the occasional spotted flycatcher working the woodland edges.

Entry is free and no permits are required. The forest is freely accessible year-round from multiple points, but High Beech, near Loughton, is a reliable and well-signed starting point. Central Line trains run to Loughton and Epping stations, making this one of the most accessible ancient woodlands from central London without needing a car.

Paths are generally well-marked but can turn muddy; waterproof boots earn their keep here in almost any season.

Autumn is undoubtedly the finest time to visit for colour and atmosphere, so pack waterproofs, sturdy boots, and an OS Explorer map, and avoid summer weekends if you prefer the forest without crowds.
