Standing on a promontory over the Atlantic, Hassan II Mosque is one of those rare places that genuinely earns the scale of its reputation. The minaret rises 210 metres — the tallest in the world — and on clear evenings a laser beam shoots from its tip toward Mecca. From the broad marble esplanade you can watch waves breaking against the base of the building, a genuinely striking sight that reminds you this structure was deliberately built where land meets sea. Guided tours run most mornings (non-Muslims cannot enter independently), typically at 9am, 10am, 11am and 2pm, with tickets around 120 dirhams for adults. The interior is extraordinary — carved cedarwood ceilings, hand-laid zellige tilework, and a retractable roof that opens to the sky. It holds 25,000 worshippers inside and a further 80,000 on the esplanade. Photography inside is generally permitted on tours, though be respectful during prayer times. Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, and women should bring a scarf or be prepared to hire one at the entrance. The mosque sits in the Anfa district along Boulevard Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah, roughly five kilometres from the city centre. A petit taxi from the medina or the central tram stops near Ain Diab will get you there without much fuss. The surrounding neighbourhood has little else to detain you, so most visitors come specifically for the mosque and move on. Mornings midweek tend to be the calmest; Friday midday closes the building to tours entirely, and weekends attract larger local crowds. Come in the morning on a weekday for the best light on the stonework and the shortest queues at the ticket office.
