Few places in the world ask as much of you emotionally as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Located at the southern end of Peace Memorial Park in Naka Ward, the museum sits at the very epicentre of where the atomic bomb detonated on 6 August 1945. The building itself is modest from the outside, but what awaits inside is quietly devastating — a careful, unflinching record of what happened to this city and its people. The permanent collection is split across two wings. The East Building provides historical context around the lead-up to the bombing and Hiroshima's wartime role, while the Main Building holds the most visceral material: personal belongings, melted roof tiles, photographs, and handwritten testimonies from survivors. Nothing is sensationalised, which somehow makes it more powerful. Allow at least two hours, and expect to leave in silence. Many visitors do. Getting there is straightforward. Tram lines 2 and 6 from Hiroshima Station drop you close to the park, or it's a flat, walkable fifteen minutes from the city centre. Admission is 200 yen for adults, which feels almost symbolic given the weight of what's inside. The museum attracts significant crowds, particularly on weekends, in summer, and especially around the 6 August anniversary commemorations — if you want a quieter visit, aim for a weekday morning in spring or autumn. There are no particular dress requirements, though many visitors dress modestly out of respect. Audio guides are available in English and well worth taking. Go in the morning when you're fresh, and give yourself time to sit in the park afterwards — the Flame of Peace and the A-Bomb Dome nearby offer space to reflect.
