Huahine sits quietly in the Society Islands while Bora Bora collects the crowds, and that neglect has done its reef a genuine favour. The lagoon here is remarkably intact — coral formations in the shallows show good coverage, with branching and plate corals largely free from the bleaching pressure that has hammered more visited neighbours. Visibility typically runs 20–30 metres in settled conditions, and the water temperature hovers around 27–29°C year-round. The signature experience is the sacred blue-eyed eels of Lake Fauna Nui, thick-bodied freshwater creatures venerated by local Polynesian culture — you don't dive with them so much as kneel in shallow water and watch them approach with an unsettling confidence. In the outer lagoon and along the barrier reef passes, you'll encounter sea turtles with pleasing regularity, reef sharks cruising the drop-offs, and the usual cast of triggerfish, parrotfish, and occasional eagle rays. Dive sites sit mostly between 10 and 30 metres, with mild to moderate currents through the passes that reward a bit of timing. Huahine runs on day boats rather than liveaboards — there's simply not the volume of divers to support them. You'll find a small handful of local operators based near Fare, the island's main village, offering guided reef dives and snorkel excursions. Group sizes tend to stay small, which makes this genuinely pleasant rather than a processed production line. The snorkelling inside the lagoon is accessible to anyone comfortable in open water. The trade-off for the quiet is less choice — a week here covers the main sites thoroughly, so pairing it with Rangiroa or Fakarava makes sense if you're building a diving trip around French Polynesia. Best visited May to October during the dry season; open-water certification is sufficient for most sites.
