The birding at Iguaçu sits within one of the largest remaining Atlantic Forest fragments in South America, a habitat so rich and so threatened elsewhere that finding it intact here feels genuinely significant. The forest is dense, humid, and layered, with towering fig trees and bamboo thickets pressing right up against the trail network. You will spend most of your time on the lower and upper circuits near the falls, where the spray keeps the understorey perpetually dripping and the light filters in unpredictably. Dawn is non-negotiable — the first two hours after sunrise are when the forest comes alive and the tourist crowds haven't yet arrived. The Black-fronted Piping Guan is easier here than almost anywhere else, moving along fruiting trees with surprising confidence. Saffron Toucanet requires patience and a good ear; listen for its rattling call in the mid-canopy before you start scanning. The Surucua Trogon is reliably found along the quieter Porto Canoas trail section, perching motionless in the shade and easy to walk past if you're not moving slowly. Purple-winged Ground Dove is the genuinely difficult one — small numbers persist near forest edges and bamboo, but sightings are never guaranteed and you should treat any encounter as a serious bonus. The boat tours on the Iguaçu River are enjoyable but not particularly productive for forest species; treat them as a break rather than a birding session. Local specialist guides, bookable through the park or Foz do Iguaçu operators, make a measurable difference to your species count. Most visitors stay in Foz do Iguaçu town, around 20 kilometres from the park entrance, with options across all price points. Go between April and October; bring rubber boots for wet trails, a scope for canopy work, and strong insect repellent.
