Kuala Lumpur is one of Southeast Asia's most underrated big cities. Modern, multicultural, surprisingly green, and considerably more affordable than its richer neighbour Singapore. The skyline is dominated by the twin Petronas Towers, which are worth the visit just for the engineering — the sky bridge connecting the two towers offers genuinely vertigo-inducing views over the city. KL works best as a base for a few days of exploring. Brickfields (Little India), Chinatown around Petaling Street, and the Bukit Bintang shopping district each have distinct atmospheres. The Islamic Arts Museum is criminally under-visited and one of the best collections of its kind in the world. For street food, head to Jalan Alor at night — long rows of plastic stools, smoke, and some of the most diverse food you'll eat anywhere. Public transport is efficient and cheap; Grab is everywhere if you'd rather not figure out the metro. The city is hot and humid year-round so build in air-conditioned breaks. Don't miss a trip up to KL Tower for an alternative perspective on the skyline, especially at sunset.
