Lehigh Valley Zoo
Schnecksville, USAattractions
Lehigh Valley Zoo sits on 26 hectares of Pennsylvania woodland about 25 kilometres north of Allentown, which means a good portion of the grounds is shaded by mature trees — a genuine relief during humid mid-Atlantic summers. The setting gives the zoo a quieter, more wandering character than its urban counterparts, and on a weekday morning you can move between exhibits without much jostling at all. Weekend afternoons in July and August are a different story, particularly around the African lion area, where families tend to cluster at the viewing windows hoping for a sighting.
The lion habitat is the centrepiece, and when the cats are active — mornings tend to be your best window — it is genuinely arresting. The red pandas draw consistent affection too, housed in a forested enclosure that gives them decent vertical space to move through. Snow leopards are the other headline act, though like most big cats they spend a fair portion of the day resting in shade; aim for an early visit or late afternoon if you want any movement. The American black bears occupy a naturalistic habitat that is among the better enclosures on site, with terrain variation and enrichment apparent during keeper-led sessions.
The zoo is modestly sized by international standards, which is partly a strength — you can do it comfortably in three to four hours without feeling rushed. It is largely pushchair-friendly, with paved paths through most of the main loop, though some secondary trails run to gravel. Parking is plentiful and free, and the site is accessible only by car from Schnecksville.
Go early on a summer weekday, bring water and sun protection for the open sections, and it suits families with children aged four to twelve particularly well.
