Lisbon is one of those cities that gets under your skin almost immediately. Built across seven hills above the Tagus estuary, it has a physical drama that few European capitals can match — trams grinding up cobbled inclines, miradouros (viewpoints) appearing suddenly at the end of narrow lanes, and that particular golden light that photographers chase all afternoon. It feels older and less manicured than Madrid or Barcelona, and that rougher edge is exactly what makes it compelling. The city breaks naturally into distinct characters. Alfama, the ancient Moorish quarter below the São Jorge Castle, is all faded azulejo tiles, laundry overhead, and fado drifting from tiny restaurants at night. Belém, fifteen minutes west by tram 15E, is where you'll find the Jerónimos Monastery and the original Pastéis de Belém bakery — the queue moves quickly and the custard tarts are genuinely worth the fuss. Príncipe Real is quieter and more residential, lined with antique shops and wine bars, while LX Factory in Alcântara has become the go-to spot for weekend markets and good coffee. Food is honest and affordable by western European standards. Bacalhau (salt cod) appears in dozens of forms, petiscos are the Portuguese answer to tapas, and a decent glass of vinho verde rarely costs more than two or three euros in a local café. Avoid the tourist menus around Praça do Comércio and wander slightly uphill instead. Getting around is straightforward. The Metro covers most areas efficiently, though the historic trams are slow and very crowded — take them for the experience, not the speed. Uber works well. Accommodation clusters around Baixa and Chiado, though staying in Mouraria or Intendente puts you closer to real neighbourhood life. Spring (April to June) is the sweet spot — warm enough for evenings outside, before the summer cruise-ship crowds arrive. Bring comfortable shoes; the hills are relentless.
