Macao
Macao, Macaocities
Macao punches well above its weight for a place you can walk across in an afternoon. This tiny peninsula — plus the islands of Taipa and Coloane — manages to squeeze in baroque Portuguese churches, crumbling colonial plazas, neon-lit casino towers, and some of the best street food in southern China, all within a few square kilometres. The contrast is genuinely striking, and it's what separates Macao from its neighbour Hong Kong entirely.
Start on the peninsula in the historic centre around Senado Square, where the wavy black-and-white cobblestones and pastel-coloured facades feel quietly European in a way that still catches you off guard. The Ruins of St Paul's is the obvious landmark and yes, it is worth it, though arriving before ten in the morning will spare you the worst of the tour groups. From there, wander uphill to Monte Fort for sweeping views over the rooftops and Pearl River Delta. In the narrow lanes nearby, you'll find egg tarts, pork chop buns, and almond cookies sold from hole-in-the-wall bakeries — eat as you walk.
Taipa Village on the middle island is calmer and arguably more liveable in feel, lined with well-preserved Macanese shophouses and good local restaurants serving African chicken, minchi, and bacalhau. Coloane, furthest south, is where the pace slows completely — Lord Stow's Bakery in Coloane Village is credited with launching the region's egg tart obsession, and it still delivers.
Getting around is easy. Free casino shuttle buses connect most areas, and taxis are cheap by any regional measure. The Light Rapid Transit now links the airport, Taipa, and the Cotai Strip efficiently. Accommodation ranges from wallet-friendly guesthouses on the peninsula to sprawling casino resorts on Cotai.
Avoid Chinese public holidays and Golden Week unless you enjoy crowd navigation at Olympic scale. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures.
