Langkawi sits at the northern end of the Malacca Strait where the Andaman Sea softens into a scatter of limestone islands draped in primary jungle. Between November and April the north-east monsoon pushes moderate, reliable winds of ten to eighteen knots across the archipelago, keeping seas manageable and skies mostly clear. You will spend a lot of time motor-sailing in the lighter patches between islands, so do not come expecting a pure downwind passage — this is cruising in the truest sense, anchoring early and exploring. The archipelago has around a hundred islands, most uninhabited, and the best cruising loops between Langkawi's main island and the outer group: Pulau Dayang Bunting with its freshwater lake ringed by karst, Pulau Beras Basah for the white sand and turquoise shallows, and the mangrove channels of Kilim Geoforest where you can take a dinghy in at slack water and watch kingfishers work the roots. Town Quay and the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club are your bases for provisioning and official check-in; paperwork for visiting yachts is relatively straightforward compared with much of South-East Asia, and duty-free status means diesel and spirits are genuinely cheap. Charter fleets operate out of Telaga Harbour on the north-west coast, with bareboat options through several reputable operators and skippered charters for those wanting someone else to navigate the shallower passages. Nights on the hook are calm enough to sleep well — anchorages off Pulau Tuba and the southern bays hold good holding in sand and mud. Best months are December through February when the north-east monsoon is settled; avoid May to September entirely, when the south-west monsoon brings squalls, heavy swell, and most charter companies pull their boats from service.
