Melbourne
Melbourne, Australiacities
Melbourne is a city that earns its reputation slowly, district by district, laneway by laneway. Unlike Sydney's harbour-front spectacle, Melbourne reveals itself through texture — the gritty charm of Fitzroy's converted warehouses, the leafy elegance of South Yarra, the multicultural hum of Footscray's Vietnamese restaurants and Ethiopian bakeries. It's a city built for wandering, and the more you give it, the more it gives back.
The food and coffee culture here is genuinely extraordinary. Melburnians take their flat whites seriously, and the dense network of cafes across Collingwood, Carlton, and the CBD laneways — Degraves Street in particular — sets a standard you'll struggle to match elsewhere in Australia. Beyond coffee, Richmond's Victoria Street is one of the best strips for Vietnamese food on the continent, while the Queen Victoria Market remains a proper working market where locals actually shop. Eat there early on a weekday morning for the full experience.
Getting around is straightforward once you understand the tram network, which is free within the City Circle route covering the CBD. Beyond that, load a Myki card and you can reach most inner suburbs easily. Taxis and rideshares fill the gaps at night. Walking is genuinely practical across the inner city, and the Yarra River paths connect several neighbourhoods on foot.
For accommodation, staying in the CBD gives you access to everything, but Fitzroy or South Melbourne offer a more neighbourhood feel without much sacrifice on convenience. Budget travellers do well in Southbank hostels; boutique options cluster around Fitzroy and Carlton.
Melbourne's weather is notoriously unpredictable — locals joke about four seasons in one day, and it's not entirely wrong. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant, roughly September to November and March to May. Pack a light jacket regardless of the forecast, and keep an eye out for the Australian Open in January if tennis is your thing.
