Miami
Miami, USAcities
Miami operates on its own frequency — a city where Latin American energy, Art Deco architecture, and year-round sunshine collide in a way that feels entirely unlike anywhere else in the United States. It is simultaneously glamorous and gritty, deeply multicultural, and relentlessly loud in the best possible way.
The geography divides neatly into distinct worlds. South Beach is the postcard version: pastel buildings along Ocean Drive, white sand stretching for kilometres, and nightlife that runs well past any reasonable hour. But the real texture lives elsewhere. Wynwood's warehouse walls are covered in world-class street art, and its galleries and bars attract a creative crowd that balances out the VIP-table scene further south. Little Havana, centred on Calle Ocho, is where you eat — pressed cubanos, strong coladas poured in tiny plastic cups, and slow-roasted pork at places like Versailles Restaurant that have been feeding the neighbourhood for decades. Brickell, Miami's financial district, has transformed into a dense urban core with excellent rooftop bars and easy access to Metromover, the city's free elevated rail loop.
Getting around without a car remains genuinely difficult outside of central areas. Rideshares are reliable, but distances are larger than they look on a map. Traffic on I-95 and US-1 during peak hours is brutal and worth planning around.
Heat and humidity are real considerations. From June through September the afternoons bring heavy rain and temperatures that make walking in direct sun unpleasant. The sweet spot is November through April — warm, manageable, and when the city fills with visitors drawn by the Art Basel fair in December or Ultra Music Festival in March, so book accommodation well ahead for those periods.
Bring light, breathable clothing, good sunscreen, and patience for the pace. Miami rewards those who slow down enough to get past the surface.
