Hongshan Forest Zoo

Hongshan Forest Zoo has built a genuine reputation among Chinese zoos, and not by accident. Spread across 68 hilly hectares in Nanjing's Xuanwu district, the grounds feel more like a forested park than a traditional zoo, with mature trees providing real canopy cover — a relief during Nanjing's brutal summer humidity.

The terrain is undulating in places, so comfortable shoes matter more than you'd expect, and pushchairs can be hard work on the steeper paths.

The zoo's approach to animal welfare sets it apart from many older mainland institutions. Enrichment programmes are taken seriously here: the Asiatic black bears in particular are given environmental complexity that you can actually watch them use — logs to roll, puzzle feeders, varied terrain.

The snow leopards are the headline act, housed in a well-considered enclosure that gives them elevation and retreat space, which means they're often visible and active rather than flat against a back wall. It's a small but meaningful distinction.

Conservation work tied to in-situ breeding for locally threatened species is part of the zoo's operating philosophy, and keeper-led talks happen throughout the day — check the board near the main entrance for timings, as these shift seasonally. Crowds peak hard on weekends and national holidays, when queues for popular enclosures can stretch significantly.

Weekday mornings are considerably quieter and animals tend to be more active in the cooler hours before midday.

Getting here is straightforward on Nanjing's metro system; Xuanwu Lake station leaves you a manageable walk away. Budget a full half-day at minimum, longer if you're interested in the bird and primate sections. Bring water and sun protection from April onwards, and arrive before 10am on weekdays for the best experience.
