Nurai Island
Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi - United Arab Emiratesattractions
Nurai Island sits about four kilometres off the coast of Abu Dhabi, reached only by boat from the Yas Marina area, and that short crossing already signals that you're leaving the city's pace behind. The island is essentially a private luxury resort — W Hotels operates the property — which means public access is limited. Unless you're a guest staying in one of the overwater villas or beach bungalows, or you've booked a dining experience, you won't simply wander ashore. That exclusivity is worth understanding before you plan your visit.
For those who do make it across, the atmosphere is genuinely serene. The Arabian Gulf here is calm and remarkably clear, the kind of turquoise that feels almost implausible given how close you are to a major city. The resort's architecture is low-rise and spread out, with the villas extending out over the water on timber walkways. It's quiet in a way that central Abu Dhabi rarely is, and the sunsets over the Gulf are slow and spectacular.
Practically speaking, the best approach for non-guests is to book a meal at one of the restaurants and arrange the complimentary boat transfer from Yas Marina — it runs regularly and takes around ten minutes. Dress codes lean resort-smart; beachwear is fine around the water but cover up for dining areas. The island suits couples and those after genuine rest rather than activities or nightlife. Peak season runs October through April when the weather is warm but manageable, typically between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius.
Avoid visiting in July or August unless you're committed to air-conditioned interiors — the humidity and heat make outdoor time uncomfortable for most people.
