Wadi Musa is the gateway town to Petra, and it carries a quiet charm that most visitors overlook entirely in their rush to reach the rose-red city. Sitting at around 1,500 metres above sea level in Jordan's Ma'an Governorate, the town itself is a layered place — part working community, part ancient crossroads. The name translates roughly to Valley of Moses, and local tradition holds that Moses struck a rock here to bring forth water, a moment still marked by a small spring and simple shrine near the town centre. The streets of Wadi Musa tumble steeply downhill toward the Petra entrance, lined with guesthouses, souvenir stalls, and restaurants serving solid Jordanian food. It is worth spending at least one evening here rather than day-tripping from Aqaba or Amman, because the town takes on a different atmosphere after the tour groups leave — calmer, more human. The hillside neighbourhood of Ein Musa is worth a short wander, and the views across the surrounding valleys at dusk are genuinely striking. Getting there is straightforward by JETT bus from Amman (roughly three and a half hours), or by hired car or shared taxi from Aqaba. Most accommodation is clustered along the main road descending toward the Petra visitor centre, so walking distance to the site entrance is rarely an issue. Note that the altitude means cooler nights even in summer, and winters can be surprisingly cold with occasional snow — layers are more useful here than you might expect. Bring a good pair of walking shoes, as the roads are steep and uneven. Spring — March through May — offers the most comfortable temperatures and the best light for exploring both the town and the Petra trails beyond.
