Roatán Reef
Roatán Bay Islands, Hondurasnature
The reef running along Roatán's south shore is one of the Caribbean's more intact systems, and that's not something I say lightly. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef sits just offshore, meaning you're dropping into serious coral architecture within a five-minute boat ride from most dive shops. Walls here start at around 9–15 metres and fall away beyond 40, with visibility commonly sitting between 20 and 30 metres on a decent day. Currents are generally mild, which is part of why this place has built such a strong reputation as a certification destination — Open Water courses practically run themselves here, and instructors are plentiful.
Sandy Bay and the West End area give you the most accessible entry points, whether you're snorkelling off the shore or jumping from a day boat. Turtle Mound and Blue Channel are reliable spots where green and hawksbill turtles cruise past with the kind of indifference that suggests they've seen enough divers to stop caring. Whale sharks do pass through, most reliably between February and April, though sightings are never guaranteed. Nurse sharks, spotted eagle rays, moray eels, and dense schools of creole wrasse fill out most dives without any fuss.
Reef condition is mixed. Sections near heavy boat traffic show anchor damage and some bleaching stress, particularly after warm-water events. The better-managed zones — protected under the Sandy Bay–West End Marine Reserve — hold noticeably healthier coral, and it's worth asking your operator specifically about these sites. Liveaboards exist but aren't essential here; most operators run comfortable two-tank day trips out of West End or West Bay.
Prices are genuinely low by Caribbean standards, making this one of the more sensible places to get certified or rack up early dives.
Best months are March through September; Open Water certification is sufficient for most sites.
