Southeast Arizona's sky islands are unlike anywhere else in the United States. These isolated mountain ranges — the Huachucas, Santa Ritas, Chiricahuas, and others — rise sharply from Sonoran Desert grassland into cool Madrean pine-oak woodland, and that dramatic transition pulls in a remarkable cast of Mexican species that barely cross the border anywhere else.

Ramsey Canyon and Madera Canyon are the obvious starting points, both well-signed with established trail systems, but even experienced birders tend to linger longer than planned.

Early mornings in the canyon sycamores and oaks are genuinely electric. Elegant Trogons call from mid-canyon riparian zones in summer, and once you've heard that hollow, frog-like croak echoing off the rock walls, you won't forget it. Painted Redstarts work the oak branches with theatrical flair, while Buff-breasted Flycatchers favour open pine areas higher up the slopes.

For Lucifer Hummingbirds, head out to the desert grassland edges around Portal or the Chiricahua foothills where agaves bloom — a scope helps at distance feeders, but patience matters more.

Access is straightforward by hire car; a standard vehicle handles most canyon roads, though Chiricahua back routes may need high clearance after rain. The Nature Conservancy runs a small lodge at Ramsey Canyon; the Santa Rita Lodge at Madera has comfortable cabins with feeders that attract species without any hiking effort.

Independent local guides are available out of Sierra Vista and Tucson and are worth the cost, particularly for navigating multiple ranges efficiently.

April through September covers the breeding season and monsoon arrivals; late July brings post-monsoon activity and cooler temperatures. Pack insect repellent, sturdy footwear, and a scope — and allow at least five days to do the region justice.
