Saint Louis Zoo sits inside Forest Park — the same sprawling public greenspace that hosted the 1904 World's Fair — and the fact that it charges nothing for general admission still feels quietly extraordinary for a collection of this quality and size.

Three million people visit each year, so weekends in summer can get genuinely hectic around the central pathways; a midweek morning arrival makes the whole 36 hectares feel considerably more manageable.

The zoo's layout rewards a loose anticlockwise loop. River's Edge is the standout habitat zone, a winding immersive trail designed around the Congo and Meramec rivers where you move between hippos, cheetahs, black rhinos and Asian elephants without ever feeling like you're shuffling past cages. The hippos in particular are remarkable — you can watch them moving underwater through a large viewing window, which children find mesmerising.

Penguin & Puffin Coast, toward the northern end of the park, houses both African penguins and tufted puffins in a climate-controlled building; arrive early because queues build by mid-morning. The zoo runs an active AZA Species Survival Plan, with well-documented breeding programmes for black rhinos, sea lions and St. Louis's own local conservation partnerships along the Missouri River corridor.

A few practicalities worth knowing: the terrain involves moderate hills and is largely pushchair-friendly on sealed paths, though gravel sections around the bird garden can slow you down. Shade is reasonable in the wooded sections but River's Edge gets full afternoon sun, so a hat and water bottle are sensible. Budget a full day if you want to cover the ground without rushing.

Go early on a weekday, wear comfortable shoes with grip, and bring your own water — the café prices are steep even if the entry isn't.
