The Vava'u Group sits in the South Pacific like a scattered handful of limestone islands, and the reefs surrounding them are genuinely in decent shape — healthy hard corals, reasonable soft coral coverage, and visibility that frequently stretches beyond 25 metres in calm conditions. Depths on the main reef systems run from about 5 metres on the shallower platforms to 30-plus metres along the walls and drop-offs. Currents vary considerably depending on the tide and passage, so you'll want to check conditions with your operator before committing to the more exposed sites. The reason most people come here, though, is not the coral. Between July and October, humpback whales migrate into Tongan waters to calve and mate, and Vava'u is one of the few places on earth where in-water encounters are legally permitted and actively guided. Slipping off a boat to float alongside a 40-tonne whale and her calf is not diving — you snorkel, breath-hold, move slowly, and try not to embarrass yourself by hyperventilating. It is extraordinary. Reef sharks cruise the outer walls, spinner dolphins appear regularly on surface transits, and eagle rays are a reliable sighting on the deeper dives. Day-boat operators run out of Neiafu, the main harbour town, and several are well established with properly maintained equipment. Liveaboard options exist but are limited compared to, say, the Coral Sea or Red Sea — most visitors combine day diving with shore accommodation. Certification-wise, open water is sufficient for most sites, though current-heavy passages suit Advanced divers better. Come between July and October for whale season, and book whale-swim permits well ahead as daily numbers are strictly capped.
