Toronto is one of those cities that takes a little time to reveal itself, but once it does, you start to understand why people who live here are so quietly proud of it. It is not flashy in the way New York is, nor as compact and walkable as Montreal, but it has a depth and variety that rewards the curious traveller. Over half the population was born outside Canada, and that diversity is not just a statistic — it is written into every neighbourhood and every menu. Start in Kensington Market, a wonderfully scruffy pocket of vintage shops, roti counters, and laneway murals that sits just west of Chinatown. From there, the city unfolds outward. Distillery District offers beautifully restored Victorian industrial architecture, now filled with galleries, restaurants, and weekend markets. Roncesvalles has a strong Polish and young-family character, with excellent bakeries and a slower pace. Queen Street West draws in the creative crowd, while Yorkville sits at the other end of the spectrum — polished, expensive, and worth a stroll if only to window-shop. The food scene is genuinely world-class. Seek out Scarborough for Sri Lankan and Tamil cooking, St. Lawrence Market for local cheese and peameal bacon sandwiches, and Chinatown for late-night dim sum. The CN Tower is a reasonable way to orient yourself early in a visit, though the views from the observation deck of Ripley's Aquarium below can feel overpriced. Getting around is manageable via the TTC subway and streetcar network, though service can be slow during peak hours. Many visitors base themselves near Bloor-Yonge or King West for easy access to most districts. Visit between May and October when the lakefront comes alive and outdoor patios fill up; winters are cold and grey, though the city functions perfectly well year-round — just bring a serious coat.
