Tortuguero sits on a narrow strip of Caribbean lowland, hemmed between the sea and a labyrinth of jungle canals that stretch deep into the rainforest. There are no roads here — you arrive by boat or small plane from the gateway town of Cariari or Moín, and that journey alone sets the tone.

The place operates on water and patience, which is either a joy or a frustration depending on the kind of traveller you are.

The canals are the heart of it. Gliding through channels lined with heliconia and towering cecropia trees, you'll spot caimans resting on muddy banks, poison dart frogs stitched like jewels into the undergrowth, and river otters if you're lucky and quiet. Manatees move through the deeper waterways, though sightings are genuinely rare and worth celebrating when they happen.

The birding is exceptional — look for keel-billed toucans, anhingas drying their wings at the water's edge, and kingfishers working the shallows.

What lifts Tortuguero above other Costa Rican parks is the turtle nesting season, running roughly from July to October. Green turtles haul themselves onto the dark volcanic sand beaches in enormous numbers, and watching a nesting female in the torchlit dark is one of those quietly astonishing experiences that stays with you.

Nightly beach access is tightly regulated — you must join an authorised guided group and pay the park entry fee, currently around USD 17 for foreign visitors — which actually keeps the experience respectful and uncrowded.

Pack lightweight rain gear, insect repellent, and decent river sandals. The wet season brings mosquitoes and daily downpours, but also the highest wildlife activity, so come prepared rather than avoiding it altogether.
