Alberobello is one of those places that genuinely stops you in your tracks. The trulli — those whitewashed stone dwellings with their conical grey rooftops — look as though they've been lifted from a fairy tale and set down in the Apulian countryside. Walking through the Rione Monti district, where over a thousand trulli climb the hillside in tight rows, feels utterly unlike anywhere else in Italy. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason, and the scale of it, experienced on foot, is quietly astonishing. That said, Alberobello is extremely popular, and the main tourist zone reflects that. Many of the trulli have been converted into souvenir shops selling ceramic tiles and limoncello, which can feel a little relentless if you wander only along the central lanes. The better experience is to cross into the quieter Aia Piccola district on the opposite hill, where trulli remain as private homes and the atmosphere is noticeably calmer and more authentic. Early mornings are genuinely peaceful here — by 10am the coach groups arrive and the mood shifts considerably. Getting there is straightforward. Trains run regularly from Bari Centrale and take around an hour and a half, passing through Locorotondo and Fasano. The town itself is compact and entirely walkable; comfortable shoes matter as the stone lanes are uneven underfoot. Summers are hot and crowded, so if you have flexibility, April, May, or October offer milder weather and far more breathing room. Bring a light jacket even in summer if you're planning to stay into the evening, when the temperature drops and the lit trulli take on a particularly lovely quality.
