Tulamben sits on Bali's northeast coast, a black-sand village that draws divers almost entirely for one reason: the USAT Liberty, an American cargo ship torpedoed in 1942 and now resting in pieces between 3 and 29 metres. You can wade in directly from shore, which makes this one of the most accessible wreck dives anywhere. The shallowest sections are genuinely snorkellable on calm mornings, before the day-trip crowds arrive from Seminyak and Ubud. The wreck itself is barnacled and encrusted to the point of being almost unrecognisable as a ship, which is part of its character. Coral growth is reasonable, though some sections show bleaching stress from recent El Niño events — worth acknowledging rather than pretending otherwise. What consistently delivers is the fish life: enormous schools of bumphead parrotfish roll through at dawn, pygmy seahorses cling to sea fans along the adjacent slope, and ghost pipefish appear with regularity. Nudibranchs are everywhere if you slow down. Visibility averages 15–20 metres, sometimes better in the dry season, and currents are generally mild, making this a forgiving environment. Beyond the wreck, the drop-off at Coral Garden and the deep slope at the Drop Off site add variety for those staying multiple days. Most divers use day operators based in Tulamben itself — a string of small dive shops lines the main road and offers everything from equipment hire to PADI courses. Liveaboards typically visit as part of broader Bali circuits rather than basing here exclusively. Best months are April to November when visibility and surface conditions peak; open-water certified divers are perfectly suited to Tulamben, though the deeper wreck sections reward those with advanced qualifications.
