The Vennbahn follows the bed of a decommissioned narrow-gauge railway through one of Europe's more unusual border landscapes, and that railway heritage shapes everything about how it rides. The gradient is almost absurdly gentle throughout — rarely exceeding two percent — because trains can't manage steep climbs either.

From Aachen you roll south through the High Fens, the Hautes Fagnes plateau opening out into wide boggy moorland that feels genuinely remote even though you're never far from a village. The tarmac surface is smooth and consistent, well-maintained by the three countries that share stewardship of the route, and the path is almost entirely traffic-free, which makes it genuinely relaxing rather than just theoretically easy.

Most riders split the 125 kilometres over two comfortable days, overnighting around Malmedy or Waimes. Both towns have small hotels and guesthouses well used to cyclists, and you can usually find a bike wash and secure storage without much trouble. Bike hire is available in Aachen and at a handful of points along the route if you don't want to travel with your own.

The trail runs through several curious slivers of Belgian territory that jut into Germany — legacy of post-war boundary changes — and these brief border crossings give the ride a quietly surreal quality, a small history lesson delivered at fifteen kilometres an hour.

The forests thicken as you cross into Luxembourg and the final stretch into Troisvierges is lovely, shaded and cool. Signage is reliable throughout, though a downloaded GPS track removes any anxiety about the few unsigned junctions near Raeren.

May through September suits this route best; spring brings wildflower colour across the Fens, while autumn turns the forest corridor amber and gold — pack a lightweight waterproof regardless of season.
