Vietnam (Ha Long Bay)
Gulf of Tonkin, Vietnamactivities
Ha Long Bay sits in the northern Gulf of Tonkin and hits you immediately — nearly three thousand limestone karsts rising sheer from brown-green water, villages floating on pontoons between them, fishing nets strung between rocks that have no business being that dramatic. It is genuinely unlike anywhere else afloat, and the sailing itself is secondary to the spectacle, which is fine once you accept that.
Wind here is seasonal and decisive. From October through April the northeast monsoon pushes a steady ten to eighteen knots across the bay, cool and reliable, giving you comfortable downwind runs between the karst clusters. Summer brings the southwest monsoon, humidity that wraps around you like a wet towel, and occasional typhoon risk — manageable in sheltered anchorages but unpleasant for passage-making. The water is rarely rough inside the bay proper; swell breaks long before it reaches the inner islands.
You will almost certainly charter a traditional junk or motorised wooden cruiser rather than a bareboat yacht — the bay has no real bareboat fleet to speak of. Halong City and Cat Ba Island are the main departure points. Skippered and crewed charters range from one-night budget trips to three-day liveaboards with kayaking excursions threaded into the itinerary; the kayaking through sea caves at Hang Luon and Bo Hon is worth building your whole itinerary around. Provisioning is done entirely by your operator. Anchoring independently is restricted; you stay in designated mooring zones, which concentrates boats but also concentrates the floating seafood restaurants, which is no hardship.
Paperwork is relatively simple for most nationalities with an e-visa sorted before arrival, but confirm your nationality's current requirements in advance.
Best for October to December, when skies clear and the northeast monsoon is settled; strong swimmers only should attempt the cliff-face scrambles on Cat Ba.
