You'll drive from Bali across to Ijen crater, trek Mount Bromo at sunrise, explore the tiered Tumpaksewu waterfall, and spend nights in local guesthouses around Malang. The route trades airline costs for time on the road and includes a ranger guide at each major site, all meals except the final day, and transport throughout Java's eastern highlands.

What to expect

Expect long days in a climate-controlled vehicle with your driver navigating between highland towns. Treks start early—Ijen in darkness to catch the crater's bioluminescent sulphur glow—and involve moderate scrambling over volcanic terrain with a local ranger. You'll sleep in simple guesthouses with en-suite bathrooms rather than hotels, eat Indonesian meals three times daily (except day four), and share ferry crossings with other travellers. The route is genuinely remote; this isn't a resort experience. Physical stamina matters—the driving days are long and some trails steep.

Good to know

Not suitable if you have spinal issues, are pregnant, or have cardiovascular concerns. You need moderate fitness. Bring trekking shoes and a headlamp for Ijen. Train connections to Yogyakarta or Surabaya airport drop-offs can be arranged separately. Day four meals aren't included; budget for those yourself.
