What to expect

You'll meet your guide well before daylight and drive to the trailhead. The trek itself takes roughly three hours uphill on volcanic rock and compacted earth—steep in sections but manageable at a steady pace. Temperatures drop significantly at altitude, so bring layers. Once you reach the top, you'll have time to settle and watch the sky lighten over the surrounding landscape. Breakfast—typically eggs, rice, or local bread cooked on portable equipment—tastes better at 1,600 metres with that view. The descent is gentler on the knees but takes longer. You'll be back in your vehicle by mid-morning.

Good to know

Start very early; tours depart around 2–3am to summit before sunrise peaks. Wear closed-toe hiking shoes with grip. Not suitable if you have back problems, are pregnant, or have heart concerns. Infants must be held throughout. Bring water and sunscreen. Lunch isn't included—eat beforehand or pack snacks.
