What to expect
You'll depart Toulouse mid-morning and arrive at Carcassonne's lower town before heading up to the Cité itself. Expect 2–3 hours wandering the fortress: climbing stone staircases, peering through crenellations, and taking in views across the Pyrenees and surrounding plains. The medieval core is pedestrian-only, so wear comfortable shoes.
