Launch into the red desert before sunrise on a hot air balloon flight over Alice Springs' sprawling outback. You'll ascend as light breaks across the landscape, drift silently above spinifex and stone, and scan for wildlife from above. After landing, toast the experience with sparkling wine and fresh fruit whilst the crew packs the balloon. Hotel transfers bookend the 4-hour outing, which comes in 30- or 60-minute flight options.

What to expect

You'll be collected from your hotel well before dawn. At the launch site, watch the balloon envelope fill as the outback wakes. Once aloft, the flight is serene—no engine noise, just wind and silence as you drift over rust-coloured earth and sparse vegetation. The pilot may point out any wildlife below. Flight time is either 30 or 60 minutes depending on your booking (occasionally split into two back-to-back 30-minute flights). On descent, you'll help gather the balloon and equipment—optional but good fun. Breakfast of wine, juice, muffins, cheese and fresh fruit follows, then you're driven back to town.

Good to know

You must be able to climb unaided into the basket (roughly 1.2 metres) and stand throughout. Not suitable if pregnant beyond 12 weeks, or if you have spinal injuries or serious heart conditions. Bad weather means cancellation or rebooking; book early in your stay to allow for rescheduling. Tell the operator about any health concerns beforehand and bring medications.
