Based in Dhalinybuy township (self-drive, 4WD recommended), this six-hour experience takes you beyond the usual circuit to a freshwater waterfall few outsiders reach. You'll watch buŋgul ceremony, try your hand at weaving or spear-making, and hear directly from your hosts about the land's deep history. A campsite at Cato River is yours for the night.

What to expect

You'll meet at Dhalinybuy by 10am and drive yourself into the country with your Yolŋu hosts leading the way. Expect a relaxed, practical day: ceremony isn't staged for tourists but rather you're joining in as guests. You'll sit close to learn a craft, listen to stories tied to specific places you visit, and have genuine conversation. The waterfall is a real detour—bring swimmers and water shoes. Prams are fine for infants. Bring all your own food and drinks; no alcohol is permitted.
