What to expect

You'll be collected from your accommodation and driven to the jetty, boarding twenty minutes before departure. The catamaran departs into deeper water where sightings are most reliable. Expect calm cruising punctuated by crew calls when a whale surfaces—scanning with binoculars becomes second nature. The boom net—a floating platform—extends from the boat; if conditions allow and whales cooperate, you can slip in for a brief swim alongside them. Most of the voyage unfolds at a leisurely pace, ideal for photographing breaches and flukes. Homemade platters and chilled drinks arrive throughout. The return to port coincides roughly with sunset.

Good to know

Bring a hat, sunscreen, and a camera with a decent zoom. The boat rocks moderately; not ideal if you have serious back problems or struggle with walking. Arrive early with your cooler of beer or wine (spirits and red wine excluded). Toilets are on board. Whale sightings are common during season but never guaranteed.
