What to expect

You'll be collected from your hotel pre-dawn for the drive to Gilimanuk port, then ferry across to Java. After a hearty breakfast, you'll begin the steep uphill trek toward the crater rim in darkness—this is when the blue fire is visible. The climb takes 2–3 hours and demands real effort; the path is rocky and uneven. You'll reach the rim as light breaks, allowing you to explore the crater's yellow sulphur deposits and acidic crater lake. The descent follows, then you'll stop for dinner before heading back to Bali.

Good to know

This trek isn't suitable if you have spinal issues, are pregnant, or have heart concerns. Wear sturdy hiking boots and bring a torch. The route is strenuous—only attempt if moderately fit. Temperatures drop significantly at altitude; bring a jumper. Start times are very early to catch the blue fire.
